Everyone has that one friend who has the filthiest bong you’ve ever laid eyes upon. You don’t want to smoke out of it, but you also don’t want to clean it either – and you shouldn’t!

Having a clean bong and is something that is personally high upon my preference list and it really grinds my gears to smoke from a dirty bong. Put it this way – if I’m smoking through a clear glass bong and I cannot see through the water – it’s time for change.

Dirty Bong Water

Personally, I prefer to use fresh water every session. It doesn’t take that long and it’s not really a hassle to do.

There is nothing worse than knocking over a bong that has been used for multiple sessions and has been left to sit for weeks on end. To put it simple, it smells like a wet ash tray. It also effects the taste of your weed, which is never a good thing. It adds a nasty aftertaste after a while.

Having clean bong water provides a smoother, cleaner smoke and it also shows off that great piece you bought. Having dirty bong water looks like you’re using Coca Cola as bong water. It’s just plain wrong.

There is a great thread over at the GrassCity Forum discussing this exact topic, some of the replies are hilarious.

That’s all well and good, but why should I change my bong water regularly?

Whilst there is no scientific proof out there, as of yet (that I know of, if anyone can clarify this then that would be great) as to why you should clean your bong water regularly, but if the reasons above are not enough then I don’t know what is.

There has been talk on the Marijuana.com forum of bacteria growing after 22 hours, this could then lead to respiratory problems if you get sick and do not get treated. Not entirely sure of the scientific proof behind this, but it seems logical.

In short – keep it clean, dirty bong water is probably the worst thing to smoke, it alters the taste, it smells and it is possible not the best for you health wise.

Talking of dirty bong water, there is something else that I have been seeing a lot of lately and that is people asking if you get higher from smoking with dirty bong water. You probably don’t – unless you’re getting resin hits as well, which I highly doubt.

If you have an incredibly dirty bong, give it a clean, then try it out. I guarantee that your next rips will be ten times easier and smoother. Having a nice clean bong just keeps you’re experience a pleasant one.
